The advantages of calcium chloride flakes for snow and ice removal are that they provide a flat surface area and stay put when applied. The profile allows them to sit on surfaces that are sloped, exposed to wind, or on stairs that would typically have a roll-off effect when using a pellet style deicer. Flakes pass through ice melt spreaders and equipment freely, providing an even and consistent coverage when applied. While pellets tend to bounce and scatter, flakes simply provide more control and are typically a better choice for properties with significant slope and/or stairs.
